Sustaining power with virtual power plants
Renewable energy plants, such as wind and solar panels farms, otherwise known as small and distributed energy resources (DERs) are becoming an integral part of the electricity grid. However, the uncertainty of renewable energy sources prevents individual DERs from profitably dealing with the grid directly. As a result, virtual power plants (VPPs) are fast emerging as a suitable means of integrating DERs into the grid.

Self Learning Energy Efficient buildings
Computer scientists are developing a self-learning software, which will help make the most of heating and ventilation in the buildings to reduce energy consumption. The ‘Self Learning Energy Efficient buildings and open Spaces’ (SEEDS) project’s main focus is to reduce around 35% of the continent’s carbon emissions from buildings and improve energy efficiency of new and existing ones.

Fully Electrical vehicles in Smart Cities
A Hitachi project is named eCo-FEV, for ”efficient Cooperative infrastructure for Fully Electric Vehicles” (FEV)., and aims at developing an integrated IT electric mobility platform that enables the connection and information exchanges between multiple infrastructure systems. Over this platform, multiple advanced electric mobility services are able to be provided to FEV users to improve the energy management efficiency and usability of the FEV, e.g. in the context of Smart Cities.

A closed-circuit community
Power Matching City is a live smart grid project involving 25 households in the northern part of The Netherlands. It has demonstrated that it is possible to create a smart grid with a corresponding market model, which enables consumers to freely exchange electricity, without compromising on comfort and convenience. This closed-circuit community represents a smart energy system on a micro-scale, offering a blueprint for entire cities to be part of symbiotic energy generation and exchange.
